Travel and parking
Our centre is located in the Sparkhill area of Birmingham.
There is a public car park located around the corner from the centre on Court Road, which is free of charge but can get very busy.

Our café
Refuel and rehydrate in our Café
We offer Fairtrade regular and decaffeinated freshly ground bean-to-cup coffees and teas, and you can chill out and relax in our café, or just take away. You can also keep in touch with the world using our free WiFi.
We offer a variety of sandwiches, savoury pastries and freshly toasted paninis or try one of our sandwich meal deals to accompany your Cappuccino or Latte and you can indulge yourself with a variety of handmade muffins, oat bars and cakes.
For younger visitors we offer a Children’s Meal Bag with a variety of nutritious and healthier items together with that occasional treat.
We respectively request that only food and drink purchased on our premises can be consumed on site. However, we do understand that exceptions need to be made where there are specific dietary requirements that we cannot cater for.

Passport to Leisure
A Passport To Leisure (PTL) card is provided in conjunction with Birmingham City council and rewards you with up to 20% off most activities at our centre.
Passport to Leisure (PTL)
What is included?
20% discount for swim, gym and classes.
Who can apply?
If you are in one of the following categories then you can apply for a PTL card:
- Aged 60 or over
- Children under 16 with parents in receipt of qualifying benefits
- Full-time student
- An asylum seeker
- A carer
- Receiving certain benefits (ask at your local centre)
- Looked after children
- People with a disability who receive a benefit
- Groups of people with special needs who require assistance (for use at one centre only – ask at your local leisure centre)
How much does it cost?
Residents of Birmingham (you pay your council text to Birmingham City Council):
- £6.00 if you are aged 69 or under
- Free if you are aged 70 and over
All cards are valid for 12 months, cardholders must remember to renew their card when it expires at which time renewal fees will be applicable. If you are on the Be Active scheme, or Passport to Leisure, you must present your ‘Places Membership’ card once registered at Sparkhill. A fee will be charged for lost or damaged cards.
How to apply for a PTL membership
Complete the leisure card application form available to download from www.birmingham.gov.uk and take this along to Birmingham City Council Leisure Centre. Please note that you will have to show proof that you are a Birmingham resident. Birmingham City Council accepts the following as proof of name and address:
- Driving license
- Council tax bill
- Bank statement
- Medical card
- Gas/electric/landline telephone bill
Once you have a blue Leisure Card with a Passport to Leisure membership from Birmingham City Council you can then bring this and one other form of ID into Sparkhill Pool and Fitness Centre along with the completed application part of the leaflet.
You will be issued with a Places Membership card which will need to be shown to access Passport to Leisure sessions at Sparkhill.

Training courses
We're proud to offer two first aid courses to ensure you have the skills required to administer first aid within the workplace, as well as our fantastic National Pool Lifeguard Qualification course.
Training courses at Sparkhill Pool and Fitness Centre
We offer the following courses:
First Aid at Work 2 day renewal
This 2 day course refreshes and updates the first aid skills of those who need to renew their First Aid at Work certificate (within the 3 year validity). The course will reassess the competency of those attending.
As a pre-requisite, candidates must hold an existing FAAW certificate to enrol onto a 2 day First Aid at Work renewal course.
Successful candidates will receive:
- Royal Lifesaving Society First Aid at Work certificate
- First Aid at Work manual

Annual First Aid 3 hour refresher
To provide adequate training to enable first aid to be given in the workplace.
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) strongly recommend that holders of a First Aid at Work qualification refresh skills annually by attending a refresher session.
You must hold a current First Aid at Work qualification to attend the course.
The session covers responsibilities of a First Aider, casualty assessment and casualty treatment.
Successful candidates will receive a certificate.

National Pool Lifeguard Qualification (NPLQ)
NPLQ is widely accepted by swimming pools in the UK and Ireland as a minimum qualification as a role of a lifeguard within the swimming pool.
The NPLQ course includes 3 sections:
- Section 1 - The lifeguard and the Law, Swimming Pool and Supervision
- Section 2 - Intervention and Rescue and Emergency Action Plans
- Section 3 - Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and First Aid.
- Section 4 - AED
The course includes swimming pool rescue skills, basic life support, basic First Aid, managing a casualty suffering from a spinal injury, managing a swimming pool environment, identifying hazards that could cause harm to users and much more.
Every candidate attending a NPLQ course must be 16-years-old at the time of taking the NPLQ final assessment and be able to:
- Jump/dive into deep water
- Swim 50 metres in less than 60 seconds
- Swim 100 metres continuously on front and back in deep water
- Tread water for 30 seconds
- Surface dive to the floor of the pool
- Climb out unaided without ladder/steps and where the pool design allows
Successful candidates will receive:
- RLSS NPLQ certificate for each candidate
- RLSS NPLQ Lifeguard manual for each candidate
- Handouts and revision sheets for each candidate
